We are excited to share an update on our activities in northern Kenya over the past few months.
With the support of GlobalGiving, we worked with the County Government of Marsabit to develop regulations for the Disaster Risk Management Act of 2023, which was enacted into law last year. For the Act to become operational, it required regulations to be developed but the County was unable to do this for the past year due to budget constraints.
The County, with a population of 459,785 (2019 census), will now be able to respond to disasters of all types due to the creation of a disaster fund as contained in the DRM Act of 2023. This will allow more people to receive the support that they need when disasters strike. Northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia are forecast to experience another drought in early 2025.
